When my Aunt passed away, her family held a funeral service that didn’t mention God once. I know that may sound strange to some people, but it was exactly what she wanted. My Aunt was never a religious person, and although none of us knew, she didn’t want her funeral to be about something that she didn’t believe in, so she made this clear in her funeral plans. For her, a secular funeral was the best way to say goodbye.
I know that not everyone agrees with this approach, but I think it’s important that everyone should have the funeral that they want. After all, it’s not about us who are grieving; it’s about the person who has died. And if they wanted a godless funeral, then that’s exactly what they should get.
Be sure to record your wishes or at least share with your loved ones your views. And for those left behind, never presume, never judge.
